Announcing a New Way to Privately Share Video

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

We’re very excited to announce a new, really easy way to privately share your video using Wistia: Project Links.

Watch this 45-second video to see how it works:

There are some situations where you just want a bunch of people to watch your video without having to jump through any hoops (e.g. enter a password or register).

Now you can have Wistia generate a secure link and send it to whomever you like, however you like. Of course, all the clicks and video views are tracked. You can even disable a link to revoke access.

Thanks to all our customers who helped push us in this direction. You know who you are!

New and Improved Wistia Search

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

We just launched a major upgrade to our search feature in Wistia. You can now search all your projects, media, and contacts with a single, powerful search.

Watch this quick screencast for an overview of how it works. Go easy on me, it’s the first screencast I’ve ever recorded.

Search tip: Forward slash (‘/’) is the keyboard shortcut for search.

Snow Leopard Screen Recording with Quicktime X

Friday, August 28th, 2009

One of the great (and only) new applications that comes with Snow Leopard is Quicktime X. Quicktime X has a multitude of enhancements but the one we’ve been most excited for is the screen recording.

I’ve created a quick screencast to show off the screen recording capabilities.

Ironically, you can’t record a screen recording of a screen recording using Quicktime X so I’ve recorded this with ScreenFlow.

Here is the original Quicktime X recording:

The process is simple and straightforward. Open Quicktime X and select “New Screen Recording” from the file menu. Hit the red button and you’re recording. When you’re finished, click the stop button in the menu bar. The default save location is your Movies folder. Then you can view it, trim it, or upload it to the appropriate site whether that’s YouTube, Facebook or your Wistia account.

Introducing Video Heatmaps

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Today, we’re excited to introduce the next evolution of Wistia analytics, the video heatmap. Heatmaps show you where individual viewers rewatch, skip ahead, and play through your video. It’s a very quick and easy way to differentiate the people who are interested from those who are not. It’s also a great tool for spotting which parts of a video are confusing your viewers.

In particular, video heatmaps are hugely helpful for lead qualification and prospecting. As video marketing continues to become more popular, it’s important to know more than just who registered to watch my webinar. I need to know if my prospects are engaging with my content. Heatmaps are a great way to measure engagement and assess interest on an individual basis.

To help explain heatmaps, we’ve created a quick interactive screencast. It’s best to see them in action. Let us know what you think in the comments!

PSA: The Branding Risk of Consumer Video Sites

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Today I was uploading some of our screencasts to different consumer video sites. The intention was to place our videos in places where people might find them in a search and then link back to wistia.com for people who want to learn more. This a standard practice and something we often recommend as a part of a larger marketing strategy.

One of the places I started uploading videos to was Veoh. After uploading, my video page was riddled with related videos, no big deal, this is how these sites drive more views and ad impressions. But a second glance revealed something shocking. The “related videos” include the videos “Naked News”, “Sexy Beach 3 Plus Opening”, “How to hack a coke machine for change”, and “WOMEN DELIVERING BABY VIDEO” among many other videos I do NOT want my company video associated with.

Here is the screenshot I took right after the video was uploaded. Be warned that many would consider this NSFW.

What I don’t understand here is that my video is titled “Wistia Video Metrics + Activity Tracking.” I’ve tagged it things like ‘business’, ‘tracking’, and ‘analytics’. Yet according to the related subject matter, Veoh has decided that “Video Metrics + Activity Tracking” is actually a stage in the human lifecycle between seduction and birth. I do not want my message seen in this context. No business owner does.

Please remember the branding dangers of consumer video before relying on them as your primary source of video hosting. Your viewers will see these related videos. But I guess on the flip-side, sex sells.  So if you’d like to be seen as related to ’sexy girl in bedroom” and “woman delivering baby”  you should go ahead upload your video straight to Veoh and tag it as “video tracking”. This public service announcement has been brought you by Wistia.
