I'll give you the technical low-down.

1. For the TinyMCE editor, we enable all HTML elements and attributes that Wistia uses.
2. We add two Wordpress filters. The first runs before any other filters--it identifies Wistia embeds and replaces them with something that will pass through Wordpress filters unscathed. The second runs after all other filters, and adds the embed codes (untouched by filters) back in.
3. In some environments, TinyMCE also strips script elements with a src attribute when switching between HTML and visual modes. So we have one more filter that looks at the Wistia embeds, determines if scripts have been stripped, and adds them back in if necessary.

You can check out the exact code on our github account. https://github.com/wistia/wistia-wordpress-oembed-plugin

This is a really good point. We've certainly seen some very successful longer videos. Even if most people aren't making it to the end of a long video, the people who do are going to be extremely engaged.

I like your: "a video can never be too long, only too boring". It's very hard to keep people's attention, but if you can do it successfully, why wouldn't you make your videos longer?

The most important thing is to measure your video's engagement and commit to making improvements.

We also mark a spot on the floor for standing during shooting - this prevents the leaning, moving, and dancing that can happen under the pressure of the camera :)
