We Updated the Project Page

Oct 26 2012

In our continuing efforts to make Wistia easier to use, more powerful, and, most importantly (in web applications as in life), better looking, we've made some changes to the Project pages in the app!

To summarize...

  • The cleaner design lets us fit more information, like each media's number of total plays, on the Project page
  • You can edit media names and access media stats directly from the Project page
  • You can select multiple media and drag and drop them into new sections

Where did the bullseye go? The one that lets me decide which section the uploaded videos will default to.

  • http://jeffvincent.posterous.com/ Jeff Vincent

We moved the ‘bullseye’ to a more recognizable ‘upload here’ link instead! I don’t think a lot of non ‘power-users’ knew the bullseye even existed ;)

  • http://brendanschwartz.com/ Brendan Schwartz

Also, with the multi-select, it’s _much_ easier to move a slew of videos into a section. Let us know if this new workflow is really frustrating after you’ve given it a try. We want to make it easy and this stuff is not set in stone!

One thing we are planning to add in the next fews months is drag and drop upload from your desktop. That way you’d be able to drag a few files or a whole folder right into a section!

    Hey there!

We removed the bullseye because we felt like the new multi-select functionality made it obsolete. You can upload a bunch of medias, then shift-select them and drag them all to a section at once.

Alternatively, you can create a new section and upload your videos directly to the section, as Jeff said.

    oh BOOM

  • http://www.shawnlam.ca/ Vancouver Video Production

Your flattery is always welcome! I like the bulls-eye for when I want to directly upload a video to a specific section and don’t want to wait for an upload before I can move it. It appears the “upload here” is only availble for new sections but I often need to add to pre-existing ones.

Also does this mean this functionality to assign upload sections is no longer available for the upload widget? I was really liking the ability to give my clients an upload function and the video going into a specific section directly.

like the redesign! have you guys considered adding stats view at a section level? Unless I’m missing something, it’s project or individual videos. Sections would be a nice addition.

  • http://brendanschwartz.com/ Brendan Schwartz

I think that is a good idea! It’s not something that we were planning on doing, but we’ll consider it for a future update. In general, we try to encourage people to organize videos into a bunch of smaller projects rather than one huge one, but I know there are situations out there where that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

I don’t know if I’m a “power user,” but I definitely miss my bullseye. Waiting for the video to finish uploading before I move it is quite the pain. That said, you guys really are the best.

  • http://www.facebook.com/seanmick Sean McGovern

When are you guys going to add the ability to download multiple files at once (like a checkbox and “download selected” option)? I’ve been asking for this for a year!

  • http://www.shawnlam.ca/ Vancouver Video Production

agreed. I’m uploading two videos right now that belong in specific sections because this affects where they appear on the playlist but with this new method the by default get put in the wrong section and I then have to move them. Not the end of the world but I did like being able to decide exactly where the video should go at the point of upload, rather than afterwards.

I don’t miss the bull’s eye, but a pin the tail on the donkey would be the bee’s knees! Do I get a +1 for being a jackass?

  • Joe

Hey Shawn! Good news – you can drag and organize medias even when they’re still uploading!

  • Joe

    Yes. Yes you do.

  • Benjamin McCormack

You have gymnastics rings in your office? Jealous. Next time, let’s see a muscle-up!

  • http://jeffvincent.posterous.com/ Jeff Vincent

    Hey Mike,

Two comments on this one, the first, which is pretty cool, is that you can move media before it’s done uploading.

The second is that I could be completely wrong in terms of ‘power users’ and the bullseye! Certainly didn’t mean to be insulting or denigrating about power/non-power users!

We have been working on those for SO LONG! Total failure. Have any tips? cc @brendanschwartz:disqus

It would be ultramaximus to be able to SORT inside of a project, just like you can sort projects themselves. Inside of a project, the ability to sort media by: Section, Name, Date, Etc. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

  • Chris

Awesome guys! Can I suggest a feature? I’d LOVE to be able to share specific videos with people within a project instead of being required to copy the video into a new project and then share that Project with one person. I have users who pay a premium to see their video stats and it would be great to have only 1 video for their profile instead of 2… One in the main project, one in their own personal project I share with them.

  • http://www.shawnlam.ca/ Vancouver Video Production

I actually can no longer drag videos. I’m uploading right now so don’t want to refresh and will test again later but I’m on FF 14.01.

  • Joe

Hm. Strange. Try refreshing after those uploads and let us know at support@wistia.com

  • http://brendanschwartz.com/ Brendan Schwartz

Thanks Chris! Sharing individual videos is an idea we keep toying around with. The thing that holds us back is that managing permissions for individual videos becomes really hard to manage and visualize for people. Do you have a huge screen with a matrix of checkboxes for each video? Let me know if you have some ideas about how it could work.

We love making features for power users like you guys (and ourselves), but we try to balance it with keeping things simple and easy to use, especially for new users. I am especially wary of changes that add to the conceptual complexity of the product. Certainly if you could share individual videos in a project it would add a lot of power, but at the same time it makes a lot of other features more complicated and harder to understand.

  • http://brendanschwartz.com/ Brendan Schwartz

Yes, tips very welcome. Still can’t make the transition!

  • Benjamin McCormack

First, make sure you have ring dips down pat (i.e. can do 10 in a row). It doesn’t hurt to go *a little lower* on your ring dips that your usual range of motion, since during the transition of a muscle-up, you’ll be pretty low. However, don’t overdue it because you can hurt yourself going to far.

A good way to practice the transition is to get a resistance band, put it between the rings, then “sit” in it to assist your muscle ups. Here’s a good demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbEUM6KQNzg

Finally, when you get ready to do the muscle-up, work on a good kip and when you pull yourself up, think of doing the biggest sit-up in your life. That energy will propel your upper body forward and hopefully put you in the bottom of your dip. It may help to start with a false grip, which shortens your range of motion and better prepares you to transition to the dip. If you’re shorter, you can probably skip the false grip entirely, but ymmv.

    Good luck!

  • http://brendanschwartz.com/ Brendan Schwartz

Wow, thanks for the tips. Going to order this resistance band thing today. Also need to work on the dips — I can do 6 or so no problem, but 10 is a stretch for me right now. Will report back!

  • http://brendanschwartz.com/ Brendan Schwartz

Haha, I love that these comments have turned into a crossfit thread! Appreciate the tips! Will need to practice my kipping. I’ve never done any kipping while doing pull ups, so I’ve got a lot to learn.

  • http://twitter.com/MaxSchnur Max Schnur

That was a bug! Should be fixed now. Thanks for the report. :)

  • http://twitter.com/MaxSchnur Max Schnur

We definitely hear you, and we talked a lot about sorting while working on this. Let’s just say that one of the main purposes of this update was to give us a strong technical foundation so we can do really cool stuff on the Project page moving forward.

  • http://twitter.com/MaxSchnur Max Schnur

This is another thing we talked about while working on this update. Stay tuned… ;)

  • http://jeffvincent.posterous.com/ Jeff Vincent

I need to work on my vigor. Maybe more caffeine?

Come by the office to help!

  • Mel

This is fine as a user but for clients they will not do it and it becomes confusing especially on big projects. Would love for the bulls-eye to come back. It would also be helpful for a heads up when things are being removed as all of our sidebar notes need to be changed in every project. Another wish is that you have a drop down where you can pull your favorites so you don’t have to input everything every time you do a new project or video. Fingers crossed this is on your list.

  • John Helyar

You guys are Crazy, I love watching you videos, you prove one thing you can have fun while you work, what ever you do do not change that format it works.

  • MagicTricks.com

Thanks for the stats next to the videos! Now at a glance I can see which are the instant hits and which are the laggers. (Seems our dogs doing magic are a big hit…). Also, the thumbnails are loading lightning fast now. You guys sure make it easy!

  • Paul Dandurand

Looks good. Thanks for the update!

  • Jonathan LaRiviere

I’m going to agree here. I LOVE the new interface and features, however they now force me to drag and drop multiple videos from my video shoots with people instead of literally JUST clicking one button and being done with it. This multiplies my steps by roughly 3, depending on how far I have to scroll down the page to shift+click videos and drag into a project. I miss when Wistia organized it for me!

  • Jesse

I love how you had the man upside down, so you could track how many people went back to confirm. Including me multiple times.

  • http://www.litmus.com Justine, Litmus

Just noticed that Litmus makes a cameo here! Love the new project page design, too :)
