Top Hat Tips

Don't Light from Below

Top Hat Tuesday is our fancy video series where someone from the Wistia team shares a useful bite-sized tip... whilst wearing a top hat.

One guaranteed way to look awful on camera? Putting your light setup too low. It creates weird shadows, and the lighting comes from an unnaturally low angle. It's much more flattering to raise your lights above your subject, since we're used to seeing other humans lit by the sun. Don't get too high up with your lights, either. The magic happens when the lights are just above your subject's eyeline to balance out shadows and make for a more pleasant image. Follow this natural expectation, or look weird—we'll leave the decision up to you. :)
