Meet Wistia
Our Story
We’re a tight-knit team of over 150 video marketing nerds (and one dog). We spend our days brainstorming for more ways to streamline the video marketing process, expanding our library of resources, and supporting over a half million businesses using our platform.
Wistia has come a long way since Brown University graduates and best friends Chris Savage and Brendan Schwartz launched the company in Brendan’s living room way back in 2006. Over the years, it grew from a small company with a video hosting and analytics solution to an industry leader offering a complete video marketing platform and endless educational resources.
In 2017, Wistia had its first pivotal moment when we raised $17.3 million in debt to buy out the company from investors. We had realized that the common “growth at all costs” approach to a venture-backed business didn’t feel like the right path toward helping folks succeed with video.
The first thing we did after taking back control over the company was to invest in initiatives that provided value to our customers, not just the ones that drove business growth. We produced our first original series called One, Ten, One Hundred. The $111,000 project explored how budget affects creativity. It ended up winning two Webby awards — and it paved the way for us to start helping brands create long-form video content.
Our new approach garnered positive attention. In 2019, Chris and Brendan were recognized as New England Entrepreneurs Of The Year.
But everything changed in 2020. The pandemic and civil unrest compelled us to reevaluate our own practices and embark on yet another new path. We shifted to a remote work environment and created a thorough plan to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) in our workplace.
The pandemic brought another big change. Video consumption skyrocketed, and in a true Wistia fashion, we focused on the needs of marketers in this changing market. In 2021 and 2022, we expanded our team and platform to help businesses keep up with the demand for video. With more talented teammates on board, we were able to add many new features, including Wistia Live, video editing, webcam and screen recording, and enhanced analytics. These additions have transformed Wistia into an all-in-one video marketing platform that provides marketers with the tools they need to create, host, market, and analyze their videos.
Today, Wistia is a hybrid workplace full of big ambitions. We’ve accomplished a lot over the years, but this is only the beginning. We’ll continue to focus on diversifying our teams, solving marketers’ needs for video, and providing the resources businesses need to create a winning video marketing strategy.
