SuperEmbeds: Viva La Revolución

Jan 10 2012

Today we are pleased to announce the launch of a new feature we call SuperEmbeds. We've totally re-engineered the way video embeds work with the goal of giving you more advanced tools to customize your video -- tools that you can now deploy with a click of the button. Please watch the video, read the post, try out the demo page and let us know what you think!

In the not-so-distant past -- a past which overlaps with the present or future for many video hosting providers -- video embeds focused on one task: embedding the video. To add extra richness to the video experience, you or your crazy computer whiz friend had to build additional functionality on top of the existing embed, creating long, complicated codes built from barely compatible snippets, stitched together haphazardly to create something that only barely functioned (and probably experienced compatibility issues we shudder to think about).

We at Wistia were not content to exist in a world where functionality like social buttons, interactive transcripts, popovers, and calls-to-action were only accessible through a cumbersome process that only 1% of the population could successfully employ in concert (#OccupyWebVideo). We've always had labs with neat extra features available, but not everyone could make use of them. So, we've been working hard on a completely new way to handle video embeds. We're starting a video revolution, and its handsome hero goes by the name of SuperEmbeds.

These have been a work in progress for quite some time, and we've thought about it from all angles. First of all, in the true Wistia way, these embeds -- and all added functionality -- are compatible across all devices, without you having to think about it. They will work on your desktop, they will work across browsers, they will work on all mobile devices, with no extra work on your end. These embeds work seamlessly no matter how many additional "plug-ins" you decide to add -- we've devised a grid system that prevents conflict and tested it like crazy. An added bonus of this system is that it will be super easy for us to add new things in the future.

We've got a lot more to say about SuperEmbeds, so keep your eyes peeled for upcoming posts about how you can use new features like our Unified API and Calls to Action to your advantage. And as always, we're happy to answer any questions you may have at support@wistia.com!

Will we be able to add a Pre-Roll to our videos using the new SuperEmbeds?

This is a super video…I think its funny….but thats a superficial comment.

    I’ll give it a try.

Very cool! This makes my life a lot easier. What would be very cool would be to have superembeds enabled for playlists – just to make your job more complicated!

Can’t wait to start using this with our clients. So many great new features and functionality. Looking forward to what I’m sure will keep coming down the pike on this new platform development for embedding.

Super, Super, Super Excited to have all of these features in one place now! Hope to see a similar setup for the playlist soon.

Excellent, really killer feature guys, love it.

Ditto Jason & Mike, let’s get this in Playlists asap and my 2012 will be off to a flyer.

Just played with this, awesome feature guys, you’ve done it again.

Minor quibble, could we customize the URL that twitter auto tweets to in the social share section, would be great if we could set a bit.ly link of our own for example so that we direct the user to a campaign, far more useful than pointing to a wistia page.

Just a thought but this is really great kit now, thank you.

How about the whole thing about Flash vs. HTML5 embed and mobile, etc.

It appears your SuperEmbeds make use of Flash, even in browsers that support HTML5 weel (FF9 and Chrome on Win7). What happens if the client doesn’t have Flash support?

  • Alyce

Try viewing it on a mobile device. It works anywhere, seamlessly. ;)

  • Brendan

Anders, just to add to Alyce’s comment, by default we use an HTML5 fallback so it will play if the client doesn’t support Flash. You can modify the embed code to have it use HTML5 by default with a Flash fallback. You just append “platformPreference=html5″ to the src of the iframe, like so:

Curious as to your response to this recent post from SEOMoz and how it applies to how Wistia does embeds and sitemaps? http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/video-sitemap-guide-for-vimeo-and-youtube

  • Max

Hi Bnpositive, that’s an awesome article, thanks for sharing! Jhammack provided a great “how-to” on getting your videos indexed, and his workflow is pretty similar to the process of our Video SEO tool. If a video is added to your sitemap within Wistia, an “SEO” embed type will show up for you within the Super Embed tool. Use that type of embed on your page (after setting up the video in our SEO tool) and your videos will be good to go for indexing!
